Bow tie or a tie? How to style a men's shirt?
There are occasions in every man's life that require a special setting. Elegant dinners, graduations, business meetings, christenings, weddings, funerals... None of these celebrations could do without an elegant shirt - a tailor-made shirt, of course. Choosing one is a challenge. The fabrics availability, choosing buttons and silhouettes can give you a headache. However, once you manage to find that one dream shirt, it doesn't mean the end of your problems. In fact, the fun has just began!
The collar of a men's shirt matters
There are a number of rules of classic male elegance explaining exactly how to choose a collar for the occasion. It is worth sticking to them, because in this way you will not only protect yourself from a faux pas, but also save yourself a lot of time. So let's start with the basics.
For a tie - Kent collar
The most universal type of collar is Kent collar, which fits most formal and semi-formal styles. This collar is also called a classic collar, and it is easily recognized by sharp, quite closely spaced lapels. This build makes the Kent best suited to men with wide, even slightly round faces. It will not fully work in the case of very slim, elongated face, because it will additionally lengthen and sharpen it. Due to specificity of the collars, the classic Kent collar fits best in a set with a tie
Italian collar
The Italian collar, otherwise known as the cutaway collar, owes its popularity primarily to the inhabitants of southern Europe. Interestingly, the Italians refer to it as a French collar. The most characteristic feature of the Italian collar are its widely spaced lapels, which at the same time do not have to be long. We also wear an Italian collar with a tie, preferably tied in a wide knot. If you plan to give it up or take off your tie during a party, then always open your shirt at the neck. Otherwise, the entire stylization will seem defective, and the proportions of your face and figure may be disturbed.
For formal occasions, a bow tie - tailcoat collar (tuxedo)
It is necessary to buy a formal men's shirt with a broken collar always accompanied by a silk bow tie for black tie occasions. Remember to choose a covered front placket and a cuff for cufflinks for such a shirt. Only this way you will make the whole styling look appropriate to the formal nature of the event. When the dress code is not so strictly defined and does not require ironing of a tuxedo or tailcoat, there are exceptions to this rule. More and more often bow ties are worn with a semi-Italian collar shirt, and even a Kent collar shirt - the necessary condition for creating such a shirt is a covered front placket.
